Primary Talks

I recently had my 7 year old give this talk. He loved it and will probably remember it for the rest of his life!

Have child lay down on a large sheet of butcher paper and trace his/her body. Have child cut out their body and draw two eyes and a happy mouth. Write in the center of the chest "Holy Ghost", then under that write in red bold letters "Truth."

TALK: (Tape outline of child's body to pulpit, or have an adult/or sibling hold next to pulpit)

When I am eight I will be baptized.
Then I will have the gift of the HOLY GHOST.
I am glad because the HOLY GHOST helps us to know what is true.
When I come to church I get warm feelings inside.
This is the HOLY GHOST telling me when things are true.
I’m glad that I belong to the true church here on this earth.
Heavenly Father loves us very much.
He gave us the HOLY GHOST to protect and guide us as back to him someday.
I will always trust that warm fuzzy feeling I get inside because I
Know that the HOLY GHOST is guiding me back to Heavenly Father.

(When talk is over, tape this outline on the wall in his bedroom. Every night at bedtime before prayer, you can talk about the Holy Ghost and how it feels to have him close. This will help your child recognize and know Him.

Opening Exercises Ideas

I like it when the children learn to bring their own set of scriptures to primary. As a presidency, we made a little set of picture scriptures with important stories and pictures photocopied. They were placed in a photo album and given to the children. Once given to the children, we knew every child had a copy of the scriptures. If the children brought these or their actual scriptures to primary, a bead was placed in a jar. (The children can place the bead in the jar, or the counselor as they sang the song "Scripture Power". Once the jar was full, a treat was brought in. Usually, rice crispy treats.

Miscellaneous - Gifts / Birthdays / Handouts

A substitute teacher in primary can receive this small but very well received thank you:

Helpers in Primary receive a individually wrapped "life savor" that had a note stapled to it saying "Life Saver".

PRIMARY ACTIVITY DAYS

I did this years ago. It is on "SERVICE".

In primary opening exercises, have an adult walk in in a trench coat, hat and dark glasses. Pre-recorded on a tape recorder, play the music to Mission Impossible, or have someone play it on the piano. (One finger)

Have the adult introduce him as a secret agent then announce the secret service activity day. Tell the children that if they see the secret agent at the activity he might have a treat for them. (At the activity, he sneaks around and if they find him, he hands them a starburst from his pocket.) Secret agent hands out invitations and leaves.

Make up secret service brief cases by folding over a black piece of large construction paper. You can even cut out a handle if you want. These are handed out at the beginning of the activity as someone give a short talk on service, with a story. Then you explain to the children what they will be doing. Divide the children in 5 groups. They will receive a small slip of paper at each station that they will leave as a note that someone has had secret service preformed for them. Children rotate to 5 stations.

Primary activity:

There are 5 stations that you have an adult supervise.

1. Set the Table. Draw on a piece of paper how a properly set table should look. Then have the children set the table on the drawing with plastic dinnerware. Then have the children break into two groups and race from one end of a room over to a table with the place mat, set the table and run back for the next child to run down and set the table till all the kids have had a turn at the race. (When children are properly trained how to perform this act of service, they are given the coupon with a picture of a table setting on it and the words written, "You have been secret serviced.") Have children place coupon in their secret service briefcase.

Instruct the children that when child has preformed this secret service duty at home, he leaves the coupon to show secret service has been preformed.

2. Give a flower - Make paper flowers out of tissue paper with stem and tape a coupon on flower marked "You have been secret serviced". Tape flower onto briefcase.

Instruct children to secretly leave the flower in a spot that someone that they love will find.

3. Organize shoes - Tell children that closets can become a mess with shoes. How nice it would be to find all your shoes have been matched and found neatly placed in a row. Have the children divide into two group. Have the children run to a pile of shoes, find a match and run back and place the shoes in a row. Then slap hands with the next child and he/she does the same.

Instruct children to secretly organize a family members shoes in their closet and leave a secret service coupon.

4. Make a bed - bring in a small toddler bed. Instruct the children how to make a bed including sheets, changing pillow Case, placing pillows, and straightening cover.

Instruct children to secretly made a family members bed and leave a secret service coupon (with picture of bed and words written "You have been secret serviced" on top of the newly made bed. Give each child an opportunity to make bed, or if it is a large group. Have several children participate at one time.

5. Wash/vacuum car - On this station you give the coupon first. Instruct a child how to properly wash and vacuum car. All the kids (all 5 stations) do this last station at once. Children wear bathing suits. Children wash their leaders cars. Each child responsible for their teachers car. (service to the teacher). Once child has been properly instructed on how to wash a car (Make sure they vacuum first because of the water!) tell them they can was the car of their dad or mom and leave the secret service coupon on the dash of the car.

At the end of the activity, serve a treat. Remember to have the secret service secretly pop his head out. If the kids find him, he hands them one starburst from his pocket.
(You can make up your own stations like "dust", "cookies to a neighbor", "letter to a loved one/missionary/bishop", etc. The possibilities are endless.

Enjoy!

SHARING TIME IDEAS

Pick some parents to come in and present 3 minutes each of the sharetime you have prepared. Use the parents to:
1) dress up and tell a story from the friend (a grandma, a prophet, a scout master)
2) Tell a personal experience like their temple wedding (bring in pictures to share with the kids)
3) Tell a story/personal experience with pictures they have drawn with their child.

Salty/Sweet

Ahead of time, freeze two different trays of ice cubes. One tray has sweet ice cubes frozen, and the other tray has salty ice cubes frozen. Give a child a printed card with a bad situation and a good situation written on it. Have them taste an ice cube. If they get the ice cube with salt, they have to say what they can to do make the wrong situation right. If they get the sweet ice cube, they get to tell how the good experience made them a better person and helped those around them.

Object Box.
Pick objects and put in a box with a hole in each side. Have child stand in front of box and place hands in each side of box. Guess what object is inside. When they guess, take the object out and ask child how the object is like the Holy Ghost. Add your comments how the object applies to your lesson.

Example:
1. Flashlight - Holy Ghost Lights the way.
2. Blanket - Holy Ghost is a comforter
3. Book - Holy Ghost is a teacher
4. Caution tape - Holy Ghost warns us of danger.

Memory:
Print sets of pictures in pairs. Place on board upside down. When the child picks the matching pair, the story is read, the scripture is read, the message is taught... however you want to play your game.

Example: (The lesson could be for instance: "I grow closer to Heavenly Father as I follow His teachings.")
Pictures of Church
Pictures of Scriptures
Pictures of sacrament
Pictures of Temple
Pictures of children praying
Pictures of hearts
Pictures of children doing chores together

After each match is found, share the message like: How does going to church help us come closer to Heavenly Father? Do you have a friend you could invite to church?... and so forth.

Variations:
1. As they match a scripture, they can read it and you could discuss it.
2. As they match pictures of scripture stores, the story could be told.
3. As they match pictures of prophets, a story could be told about that prophet.
4. As they match pictures of temples, a story could be told about that temple.
5. As they match pictures of bishopric members or their wives, and Primary Presidency members, the matched person in the picture could come up and tell a story of how HF was there for them when they prayed.

Mystery Balloons.
Put a folded up piece of paper in a balloon and have a child come up and pop the balloon to reveal the paper inside.

Example:
Put different scriptures on paper, fold and place in balloon, then blow-up and tie.
Put different pictures, numbers, or clues on paper, fold and place in balloon. The pictures, numbers, or clues could relate to different stories, song book pages, clues to find a prize somewhere in the room. With each balloon, a story or lesson is taught, getting the children closer to the prize or answer to your game.

PRIMARY SECRETARY HELPS

Door Markers.

Have teachers put on door a sign you made identifying their class. Such as "Valiant 10, Teacher Sister Smith." Then have each child's picture cut-out and taped/glued to paper along with their names. I like to cut around each child's face. Put in a protective jacket. When a child needs to be found it is much easier.

BULLETIN BOARD IDEAS

For September 2010, "I obey Jesus Christ Because I Love Him. I took the cover of the 2010 Primary Outline (Picture of Savior with children around him) and added (taped) pictures of the primary children's faces around the Savior. I took each child's picture individually and had them look different directions, and either up, down, or straight across, so when I pasted the child on the picture, it was like they were looking at the Savior. I cut around each child. (If you are good with Photoshop, it could work too.)  I would suggest instead of a blue background, that you do the beige (same as the art work).  It might be tricky to get the children's faces the same size as the photo faces.  Each child lined up and I took their picture.  Even though it worked out for me perfectly the first time, I would suggest taking at least two or three pictures of each child looking up, down and straight across and using the best shots.

You could also use this picture with the kids faces added as the cover of your sacrament program hand-out the day of your children's Primary Sacrament Presentation.

Please let me know if you did this in your primary.  It would make my day!

SINGING TIME IDEAS

"Were All Together Again" pg. 259

Place hands on lap while sitting. Every time you sing "Here" you stand and clap your hands, then place your hands back on your lap. Basically... every time you say "Here", you stand and clap (then sit back down quickly).  Every time you say "we're" you slap your lap sitting.

This is very fun!

Hide and seek is always fun.
Pick a "hider" and a "seeker". The "hider" hides an object somewhere in the primary room while the "seeker" stands outside the room. The "seeker" is called in as the children are singing a song. As the "seeker" gets close to the object they sing louder as the child gets closer to the object or softer if the child is getting father away from the object, helping the "seeker" to find the hidden object.

Chalk and Eraser.
If you are stuck with a lot of time and are learning a new song this works with some songs... Have children draw on the chalkboard pictures to help them sing a new song you are trying to teach them. You can say "Humm, what can we draw for gift...?" The children raise their hand and say "We can draw a present!" That child then takes the chalk and draws a present.

Example: "Picture of an eye" I always have a "picture of smile" happy feeling when I go to "picture of Church" church. The "picture of an organ" plays so "picture of a bunny" soft and sweet "picture of a candy" I "picture of feet" tip toe quiet to my seat "picture of chair".

Then you can start erasing pictures. You can say... "Do you think we can sing this song if I erase the Eye and the Chair? Let's try..." Do this until all pictures are gone. You can have children come up one by one and decide which pictures to erase.

SONG CHARADES... You can have children stand and act like what you are singing about. (This is not like playing charades) Ask child what they can do to represent a word in a song. (You use the children instead of pictures). See below for example.

Example: "Once within a Lowly Stable"

1. Have child pretend they are a stable. They can put their hands over their head like a roof top for: Once within a lowly "STABLE"
2. Then have two children pretend they are a sheep and an ox for: Where the "SHEEP" and "OXEN" lay."
3. Then have a mother pretend she is laying her baby in a manger for:
A loving mother laid her baby
4. Then have another child bend down like they are a manger and the mother pretends she is laying her baby in the manger for:
"In a manger filled with hay"
(Maybe the girl acting like the manger can fluff her hair when they say hay.)

Solo
Every once in a while... give the children an opportunity to sing a portion of the song solo from his chair or in front of the primary. Pick two children from a class. One child sings by their self: "Faith is knowing the sun will rise, lighting each new day". Then the next child sings: "Faith is knowing the Lord will hear, my prayers each time I pray. Then all the children finish the verse: "Faith is like a little seed, if planted, it will grow, Faith is a swelling within my hear, when I do right I know." (The children can be picked in a special way like a stick pull, or because they were super singers.)

Child can get up and lead a song. You can show them the timing in the book and quickly show them how to do their hand motions. The whole primary can practice with you, but only the leader can lead the song.

Bring a girl's hat and a boy's hat. Bring one child to the front of the room. Stand behind the child with both hats in your hand. As the children sing a fun song, place either the boy or girls hat on the child's head. When the girl's hat is on the child, sing in a "high" voice. When you place the boy's hat on the child, the children sing in a "low" voice.

Red sock, green sock!
Have a child stand at the front of the primary. Place a red sock on one hand and a green sock on the other hand. Tell the child that when they start singing, they can hold up the green sock which tells the children to keep singing, or switch to hold up the red sock to have the children stop singing. They control how many times the children stop and sing.

This room is bugged!
Hid plastic bugs around the room with numbers written on their belly. The numbers tell which song to sing next. You choose a children, one by one after each song is sung to find the next hidden bug in the room. Look for your super singers.

Play Simon Says. The winner picks the next song.

Do as I'm Doing.
Pick a child to come up and choose an action to do while singing song. Child leads ever one in action, then sits down and another child is picked.

Pictures held by children.
Each child holds a picture representing words to the song to help children remember the words to a new song. Pull pictures out of children's hands one by one until the song can be sung with no pictures. You can still point to the child standing that was holding the picture, even though they are no longer holding the picture in their hand.

A children's band with instruments
. As the children are singing, give each child something to play with the beat. They can play their instruments when certain words are being sung, or at the end of phrases of certain fun songs.

Example: Song "We are Different" pg. 163

I know you "ching ching"
And you know me "ching ching"
We are as different as the sun and the sea "ching ching"
I know you "ching ching"
And you know me "ching ching"
And that's the way it is suppose to be "ching ching".

I have seen shakers be made out of very simple things. Fold a plate in half and fill with popcorn. Poke holes along folded sides of plate and weave with yarn to hold in popcorn. Or fill baby food jars with popcorn and replace lid. You can bring in pot and pans, spoons, whatever and have the children make up an instrument. You can even get two dowels and have children hit the two sticks together.

Sign Language
Have someone come in and teach the children a simple song in sign language. "I am a Child of God" is one that they will use the rest of their life.

ANIMALS
When song leader holds up different pictures, or point to pictures on board, children sing accordingly: (Use three animals below or more)

1. Bunny: Sing softly
2. Bee: Humm song
3. Lion: Sing Loud
4. Seal: Sing while clapping to the beat
5. Mouse: Stop singing

6. Flamingo: Sing whild standing on one leg

If you don't have pictures you can make at least 3 hand movement to represent the following animals:

1. Giraffe: Hold hand straight up with fingers together and pointed down. When you lower your hand, the children sit down.
2. Bunny: Make bunny hears
3. Lion: Make a Roaring face with claws next to face

Pioneer Songs: Bring in dress-up clothes, bonnet, hat, vests, aprons. Have children dress up and act out what you are singing about.

Example: Walking, picking berries, making fires, pulling a handcart, picking flowers, marching, show strong arms for courage.

Apron with pockets containing #ers 1-11. As child opens the number, follow the list below. A fun way to stir up a boaring singing time. (Some songs might be inappropriate to sing like suggestions below.)

1. Sing like an opera singer;
2. Boys only; Girls only
3. Standing up;
4. Sing with your mouth closed (very funny);
5. Sing staccato;
6. Sing with your eyes closed;
7. Sing like a wide-mouth frog;
8. Sing in a whisper;
9. Sing while you giggle your lower lip;
11. Sing like a monster (I let them make faces, sing in a gruff voice,
